Personal Finance

Our Personal Finance project has enjoyed a successful history since its initiation in 2003, reaching over a hundred high school students in the Pittsburgh area. Today, teenagers receive little, if any, education on the basics of personal finance and are often unaware of the consequences of issues such as identity theft and poor credit ratings. Personal Finance has conducted workshops at a dozen high schools since the project's foundation including lower income schools in the Pittsburgh area. The project presents information on topics ranging from the basics of writing a check to the differences between stocks and bonds, while addressing issues such as identity theft and tax laws. Before and after our presentation, students are given a brief quiz on personal finance, and, on average, show a 75 percent increase in scores after the presentation. This year, we are looking to take the project to new heights and are currently in contact with 50 schools in the area.
